Artist Bio

Ann E. Hale

  .
My strong interest in drawing and painting accompanied my career as a human relations trainer for psychodramatists and director of improvised enactments. Since the early 1980’s I have given more time to the study of art history and developing studio arts (Roanoke College), exhibiting and teaching. My artwork is mostly representational with breaks to explore abstract images. I like to choose the medium to fit my chosen treatment of the subject. I work mostly in oil and graphite with occasional ventures into mixed watermedia, collage and soft pastel.

I am most appreciative to the guidance I have received from professional artists, Ernest Johnson, Vera Dickerson, Peyton Klein, Frank Hobbs, Mary Echols, Ann Glover and Alex Powers..

I am a charter member and for ten years I was an officer of The Market Gallery. In 2014 I am taking a break to work on various art interests.
In March Judy Arkell and I are giving a short course on working with soft pastels. Sunday, March 16 (still life) and Sunday March 23 (landscape). The hours are 1-4pm, with option to stay later and continue working until 5:30 or 6pm. Fee: $65 will include your pastel paper. Bring your own pastels, and also have access to additional pastels supplied by us. More info: call (540) 400-8182 or 540-525-4104.

I have taught drawing at the Studio School in Roanoke, The Beverley Street Studio School in Staunton, VA and the Academy of Arts in Lynchburg, as well as working with private students at my studio in Old Southwest (Roanoke, VA) . While I greatly enjoy long visits to art museums and galleries, the first works of eager art students is a deep, personal pleasure.
I have exhibited regionally as well as internationally, with paintings in private and corporate collections. I live in Roanoke, VA Many of the landscapes I paint reflect the scenic views, pasture, creeks and country roads near Floyd Co., VA.

Ann will be a featured artist at the gallerypainting on site in the gallery June 24 - July 26.  Opening reception will be Sunday, July 6, 1-4pm, and again Friday, July11
