Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, founded in 1911 at Indiana University in Bloomington, will return home to its founding roots a year from now for its Centennial Celebration and 80th Grand Chapter Meeting.

A wide range of events and activities are planned for both Indianapolis and Bloomington that are expected to attract 20,000 Kappa Alpha Psi members, and their spouses and children from around the world.

At a July 5 press conference at the Indianapolis ArtsGarden, Kappa Alpha Psi officials proclaimed their excitement for this special centennial celebration in Indianapolis. With activities centered in the new wing of the Indiana Convention Center, plus events in the Kappa’s headquarters hotel, the new glass walled skyscraper JW Marriott Hotel, the Kappa centennial celebration is expected to generate more than $15 million in revenue for local businesses.

The Kappa celebration isn’t just for Kappa members. Kappa’s national Grand Keeper of the Records and Exchequer Al White said, “We want to invite all Greek letter organizations to participate with us.”

Organizers also have invited the Indianapolis community to the six -day convention, which will feature numerous activities that the entire community can participate in, including a health fair, a job fair, a gospel concert, R&B concert and comedy concert. National celebrities and newsmakers are also expected to attend.

Kappas will also participate in a partnership with IPS School 42, named after Kappa Alpha Psi founder Elder Watson Diggs. The partnership includes refurbishing the school’s playground.

During the celebration, Kappa members and their families will travel 60 miles from Indianapolis to Bloomington for activities and events, where the fraternity was founded by Diggs in January 1911.

In fact, the fraternity plans ceremonies Jan. 5 in Bloomington and Indianapolis honoring the actual founding day of the fraternity, which has some 64,000 members worldwide.

As the headquarters to many national fraternities and sororities, Indianapolis Greek organizations are excited about the Kappa Alpha Psi centennial celebration.

Peter Smithhiser, president and CEO of the Indianapolis-based North American Interfraternity Conference, saluted Kappa. Alluding to Indianapolis hosting the 2012 Super Bowl, Smithhiser told the couple of hundred people attending the kickoff event, “When Kappa Alpha Psi meets here that will be the interfraternity Super Bowl for Indianapolis.”

The Kappa Alpha Psi Centennial Celebration and 80th Grand Chapter Meeting begins with pre-activities July 2 through July 4, with official activities taking place July 5 through July 10. The event precedes next year’s 2011 Indiana Black Expo.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Announces Milestone Achievement in Sunday of Hope Initiative

(Philadelphia, PA)- May 28, 2010 - Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. announced today it has achieved a milestone benchmark of raising One Million Dollars in its historic Sunday of Hope Initiative partnership with churches and the community in a multi-layer effort to support the work of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The Grand Polemarch, Dwayne M. Murray, Esq., along with ministers and representatives of the top contributing churches to the Sunday of Hope Initiative, during a ceremony at St. Jude’s headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, today made the presentation to St. Jude representing the million dollar mark. “Kappa Alpha Psi began this initiative three years ago, because we knew that the work of St. Jude was an invaluable asset to the lives of children,” Murray said, “we are pleased and eternally grateful to our partners—the churches and communities that worked alongside us for recognizing this organizations’ priceless work.” The keynote speaker for the occasion was Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, Pastor of the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. He emphasized the wisdom of his fraternity partnering with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and understanding God’s charge to each of us to care for “the least of these.”

Kappa Alpha Psi began the Sunday of Hope Initiative in May 2008 with a goal of raising $500,000 in five years, by partnering with churches and other key local community groups in each city and region where the fraternity’s more than 750 Undergraduate & Alumni Chapters provide community service.

At the time of the announcement three years ago, Grand Polemarch Murray said, “we have decided to assist in the waging of war against childhood diseases, and the work at St. Jude’s exemplifies the frontline of the battle against cancer and other diseases that affect our children. It’s all about the children, and I urge all members of Kappa Alpha Psi to continue to reach out to churches and other organizations to assist us in this perpetual, lifesaving war.” He said that, “we’re particularly proud of the tremendous work St. Jude does in saving lives in it’s sickle cell program, a disease that disproportionately affects African Americans.”

Because so many answered the call to action, the Grand Polemarch also expressed enormous gratitude to each and every church family and community organization that stood with the fraternity in supporting the life saving work of St. Jude. “In one of the worst economic periods this country has seen since the Great Depression, countless numbers of people opened their hearts and their wallets,” Murray said. “Martin L. King, Jr. once said, ‘the question is not if I help that person what will happen to me; but, if I don’t help what will happen to them.’ Through these efforts we have shown people still care about what happens to them.”

John T. Lanier Appointed Deputy Director of Organizational Effectiveness

(Philadelphia, PA) May 5, 2010 - Grand Polemarch Dwayne M. Murray, Esq. announced today that he is broadening his cabinet with the addition of a Deputy Director of Organizational Effectiveness.  John T. Lanier, former Polemarch of the Eastern Province will assume the duties of this critical position immediately.

As Kappa readies for our Centennial Celebration, we need to be prepared for all of the extra responsibilities that will come from it.  John will be of great value in supporting our efforts to ensure that our Centennial is the best it can be. ” Grand Polemarch Murray said.  “We are fortunate to be able to tap his skills at this critical point.”

In addition to being a key part of the Centennial Celebration planning and implementing process, Brother Lanier will work directly with the Grand Polemarch in his new role as President of the Council of Presidents of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC), manage the GLAD grant sponsored by State Farm for NPHC, and support the Director of Organizational Effectiveness, Michael Brewington, as needed; particularly with National Founder’s Days.  Brother Lanier will also have the lead in preparing manuals and other materials for all new Board Members, Province Polemarchs and Senior Province Vice Polemarchs.

Brother Lanier has served the fraternity with distinction and is an exciting addition to the Grand Polemarch’s cabinet. “Brother Lanier is a quintessential example of what it means to ‘Answer the Call to Service,’ Brother Murray said.  “I am extremely grateful to have him as part of our Leadership Team.”
